Android 17 just got a major refresh! 🤯🔥
Google has officially started rolling out Android 17 QPR1 to Pixel devices as part of the September 2026 Pixel Feature Drop.
And while this isn't Android 18 or a completely new version of Android, there's actually a lot happening here. Google has added a huge collection of smaller UI changes, new features, quality-of-life improvements, multitasking upgrades, media improvements, customization options, Digital Wellbeing features and more.
Android 17 QPR1 started rolling out on September 15, 2026, following an extended beta period. It is currently rolling out to supported Pixel devices alongside the September security update.

I've covered the biggest changes and features in the video below, so definitely check it out if you want to see Android 17 QPR1 in action.
🔥 What is Android 17 QPR1?
QPR stands for Quarterly Platform Release. These updates allow Google to introduce new Android features and improvements between major Android versions.
Android 17 QPR1 is the first major quarterly update for Android 17. Google has been testing it through multiple beta releases, and the stable version is now rolling out to Pixel devices.
The update focuses heavily on polish and quality-of-life improvements rather than one giant headline feature. That means you'll find lots of changes throughout the interface and system.
🚀 What's New in Android 17 QPR1?
Let's go through some of the most interesting changes.
1️⃣ More Blur & Material 3 Expressive UI
Google is pushing the visual polish even further with additional translucency and blur effects throughout the system.
You'll find more blur in places such as the volume panel, Power menu, home-screen context menu and app folders.
Quick Settings also gets smoother animations, while predictive-back animations are now supported in more areas of the system.
2️⃣ Redesigned Media Player 🎵
Android 17 QPR1 introduces a redesigned media carousel for situations where multiple media apps are active.
Instead of the older navigation dots and arrows, you can swipe between media sessions, with previews of other active players appearing beside the current one.
The media player has also received additional animations and visual improvements.
3️⃣ Screen Recording Gets Smarter 🎥
One of the most useful changes is in the Screen Recorder.
Android 17 QPR1 now defaults to recording the last-used application instead of automatically selecting the entire screen.
You can still switch back to full-screen recording whenever you want.
4️⃣ New Keyboard Quick Settings Tile ⌨️
Android 17 QPR1 adds a dedicated Keyboard tile to Quick Settings.
Once added, you can quickly open the keyboard switcher and change between your installed keyboard apps without digging through Settings.
5️⃣ Finally, Stop the Annoying Mobile Data Popup 🤯
This is one of those tiny changes that can make Android feel much nicer to use.
When you turn mobile data back on after disabling it, Android can now show a "Don't ask me again" option.
Once enabled, you won't keep getting that same confirmation prompt every time.
6️⃣ Cleaner App Long-Press Menu
Long-pressing an app icon on the home screen now provides a more organized experience.
Android separates app shortcuts from system actions such as Widgets, App Info, Bubble and similar options.
7️⃣ Multiple Screen Savers
Android 17 QPR1 gives you more flexibility with screen savers.
You can select multiple screen savers, rearrange their order and switch between them using gestures.
8️⃣ Custom Vibration Patterns for Ringtones 📳
You can now assign different vibration patterns to individual ringtones.
That means you can potentially recognize who's calling just by the vibration pattern without checking your screen.
9️⃣ Linux Terminal Gets More Customization 🐧
Android's built-in Linux Terminal continues to become more powerful.
QPR1 adds options for custom fonts, color schemes, keyboard shortcuts and automatic port forwarding for the virtual machine.
🔟 Better Desktop Mode 🖥️
Android 17 QPR1 also improves the desktop experience on supported large-screen devices.
Hovering over the maximize button can reveal shortcuts for full-screen, split-screen and desktop windowing.
Picture-in-picture windows can also be moved more freely instead of being restricted to a particular side of the display.
1️⃣1️⃣ Bubbles Get Drag & Drop
Floating app Bubbles become a little more useful with drag-and-drop support.
Content can be dragged from an app running inside a Bubble and dropped into the window underneath it.
1️⃣2️⃣ Quick Notes Tile 📝
A new Quick Settings tile gives you faster access to your default note-taking application.
On devices using a mouse or touchpad, the note-taking app can also be assigned to a corner shortcut.
💎 Pixel-Exclusive Features
Android 17 QPR1 isn't the only thing arriving. Google is also bringing additional Pixel-specific features as part of the September Pixel Drop.
👥 Pixel VIPs Widget Redesign
The Pixel VIPs widget has received a significant redesign.
You can now call or text favorite contacts directly from the home screen with a single tap.
The widget also gets notification badges, while a floating navigation interface lets you quickly switch between VIP profiles.
⏸️ Pause Point Comes to Older Pixels
Google's Pause Point Digital Wellbeing feature is now expanding beyond the Pixel 11 series to Pixel 6 and newer phones.
It adds a short pause before opening selected distracting apps, giving you a moment to reconsider whether you actually want to open them.
🛡️ More Scam Detection
Google is also expanding scam-related protections on supported Pixel devices.
Scam warnings can appear while typing a response to a suspicious message in supported regions, with processing handled on-device in the US.
🪄 Harry Potter Theme Packs ⚡
And if you're a Harry Potter fan, Google has something fun for you.
Google and Audible have introduced Harry Potter Audiobook Packs that allow compatible Pixel users to customize wallpapers, icons and sounds inspired by the Harry Potter full-cast audio editions.
⌚ Pixel Watch Improvements
The September Pixel Drop also includes improvements for Pixel Watch users, including expanded one-handed gestures on Pixel Watch 3 and newer models.
Pixel Watch 4 and newer also receive improvements to Raise to Talk and gesture recognition.
🔐 September Security Update & Bug Fixes
This update isn't only about flashy features.
Google is also rolling out the September 2026 security patch and a large collection of bug fixes across areas such as apps, Bluetooth, camera, graphics, framework, system, telephony and the user interface.
Some of the fixes address game-related crashes, camera stability, graphics performance, widget issues, notification problems, external display crashes and system UI lag.
